Written by a clinician, for clinicians

Look inside before you decide.

Every page here is a real page from the Toolkit. Tap any page to read it.

Why this exists

It's fine to keep the script in front of you.

Pausing mid-session to find the right words is ordinary. Every clinician does it, whatever their years in practice.

Most of us keep notes nearby: a training handout, a page of cognitions, a scrap of paper with the calm place script.

This is that, organised phase by phase, so the right page is always the next one you turn to.

The script is on the page, so you don't have to hold it in your head.

How it works

Three steps, every session.

Phase 1

History taking & treatment planning

Intake questions, life timeline and target list.

1

Find your phase.

Each of the eight phases has its own colour and edge tab, so in a printed binder you turn straight to it.

Phase 2

Calm place script

Purpose, guidance and the full text to read aloud.

2

Read, then adapt.

The words for your client sit in shaded boxes; the guidance for you is in plain text. Follow them closely or put them in your own words.

Phase 4

Desensitisation

Set log with space for notes between sets.

3

Note as you go.

Each page has room for answers, targets, cognitions, SUD and VoC, so the client's file comes together during the session.

“I already have my manual”

Your manual teaches the protocol. The Toolkit sits beside you while you use it.

Your training manual

  • Teaches the protocol
  • Read before and between clients
  • Dense reference
  • You take notes elsewhere

The Toolkit

  • Built for use during the session
  • One colour tab per phase
  • Script and worksheet on the page you write on
  • The client's file builds itself

Keep the manual for study. Keep the Toolkit beside you in session.

Phase 2 · Preparation

For clients who need more time before reprocessing.

Every client arrives with a different window of tolerance. Phase 2 gives you 68 pages to build resources at their pace.

  • Seven resourcing scripts: calm place, container, light stream, resource team, conference room, future template and the butterfly hug
  • Window of Tolerance and polyvagal psychoeducation, each with worksheets
  • Breathing, pendulation, Havening® and tapping-in exercises
  • A 66-strategy distress tolerance list and an emergency Safe Place plan
  • The Flight Plan checklist and the TIP protocol for recent events

Each script includes its purpose, guidance for you, troubleshooting for when an exercise doesn't land, and the full text to read aloud.

Phase 2

Calm place script

Purpose, guidance and the full text to read aloud.

Phase 2

Window of tolerance

Psychoeducation page with a client worksheet.

Phase 2

Container exercise

Script with troubleshooting for when it doesn't land.

What it gives you

Less to hold in your head.

In the room

The words, the questions and the scales on the page in front of you, so you stay with the client instead of searching your memory.

Before the session

Prepare in minutes. Print the phase you need, review last session's notes and know where you'll pick up.

For your clients

Client-facing worksheets and scales they can see and use, which makes the process easier to explain and follow.

A note from the author

Dear colleague,

When I first began working with EMDR, I quickly realized how much preparation happens behind every session.

Over the years, I collected scripts, clinical notes, worksheets and practical resources that helped me bring more structure to my work. But they were scattered everywhere — across folders, notebooks and documents that were never quite easy to find when I needed them.

I often thought there had to be a better way.

That's what inspired the creation of this workbook: bringing the essential EMDR resources together in one thoughtfully organized place, so therapists can spend less time searching for materials and more time focusing on their clients.

I wanted something practical, easy to navigate and genuinely useful in everyday clinical practice.

My hope is that these resources make your preparation a little easier and become something you can confidently return to throughout your work.

Take what serves you, adapt what you need, and always trust your clinical judgment.

Warmly,

Amelia Bennett
